The Lory Duck: A Chandelier Inspired by Nature

Designer Serghei Calarash's Award-Winning Lighting Fixture

Serghei Calarash, a renowned designer, found inspiration for the Lory Duck chandelier in the fluidity and serenity of a duck gliding through calm waters. The design process involved creating several sketches from photos of birds in nature, focusing on the wings, torso, beak, and other shapes that resemble a duck.

The Lory Duck chandelier stands out for its unique design and functionality. It is a suspension system assembled from modules made of brass and epoxy glass, each resembling a duck. The modules offer configurability, allowing each to be adjusted to face any direction and hang at any height. The chandelier's technical specifications include a height of 800 mm, a diameter of 1000 mm, and three LED lamps. The design exudes a minimalist and art deco style.

The design process was not without its challenges. Serghei aimed to create a piece that was both minimalistic and rich in character. The goal was to design a chandelier with clean and simple lines, with each module resembling a stylized duck. The final challenge was cost; the production of a custom glass bulb was expensive, but Serghei found a solution by using epoxy glass as the material.

The Lory Duck chandelier was designed in Moldova, Chisinau, between May and September 2018. The basic shape of the lamp was born relatively quickly, but it took months of research and development and countless prototypes to achieve the perfect balance and look from all possible angles.

The design has earned recognition and accolades, including the prestigious Golden A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2020. This award is granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that advance art, science, design, and technology. The Lory Duck chandelier is indeed a testament to Serghei Calarash's prodigy and wisdom in design.
